Punjab State Medical & Dental Teachers Association (PSMDTA) has welcomed the decision of the Minister of Health, Medical Education and Research Dr. Vijay Singla for taking cognisance of report published a leading English daily regarding a scam in sanitiser procurement during the Covid-19 pandemic and for order to submit the report from Health Department in 24 hours.

In a joint press release, PSMDTA state President Dr. DS Bhullar, state general secretary Jaspreet Singh Kauldhar and state coordinator Dr. Darshanjit Singh Walia said that the PSMDTA is hopeful that the matter will be taken to its logical conclusion in a time frame manner and the guilty punished. In fact there is urgent need to probe all purchases made by the Punjab Health System Corporation during the past ten years including the construction work done in medical and dental colleges under Government of Punjab which may open the Pandora’s Box about the irregularities done in this department.

PSMDTA welcomed health minister decision; requested to check irregularities done in past too. In Government Medical College Patiala, the new five-story institute building was to be completed four years back at the cost of around Rs. 35 crores but the college authorities were allegedly forced to take over the possession of this building just before the code of conduct in spite of major faults in the building structure as alleged by the faculty and the medical students. The class rooms, examination halls and laboratories in the new building made for 225 medical students are not up to the mark and the students are being compelled to attend classes in the old building meant for 150 students. The college committee has time and again pointed out that the works around 8 to 10 crore are still pending, which needs a high level probe,

Similarly, the new mother and child complex in Rajindra Hospital was constructed with an aim to provide all facilities and necessary equipment under one roof but the related Gynaecology and Paediatrics departments are yet to be shifted to this building even after five years which are still running in the old dilapidated buildings in the hospital and PSMDTA appeals to the new minister for personal intervention for shifting these departments in the new complex.
