Giving details here on Tuesday  Deputy Commissioner Dr. Preeti Yadav said that by converting disposable plastic bottles, which are known to be major pollutants, into containers for foliage, the initiative not only reduces the amount of pollutants in the environment but it also uses the same pollutants productively. Underscoring the features of vertical gardening, she elaborated that this project is significant because it is fundamentally based in the values of the 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. By using existing bottles as containers, the Vertical Garden Initiative propagates the advantages of reusing and recycling materials, and the focus on environmentalism demonstrates the importance of reducing plastic usage. The project is especially replicable because it uses existing surfaces to increase green cover, transforming one’s idea of utility while simultaneously beautifying the environment.

Dr. Yadav said that in Rupnagar, this project was initiated by installing vertical gardens at the entry gate of the District Administration Complex. These gardens were created by recycling over 600 disposable plastic bottles and planting saplings in them. The administration envisions scaling up the existing project to cover the entire wall at the entry to the DC Office with these vertical gardens in the future.
