Punjab health minister derogatory behavior with internationally acclaimed doctor gets criticism from every quarter

Today, Punjab health minister Chetan Singh Jauramajra visited Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot.
As per available information, the health minister found minor discrepancy in sanitary conditions and bed sheets of the hospital. On this, the health minister humiliated renowned doctor and vice chancellor of Baba Farid University of Medical Sciences, Dr Raj Bahadur. The minister asked the VC to lay on the bedsheet.
This act of the health minister has invited criticism from every quarter, including medical fraternity.
IMA Punjab president, Dr Paramjit Mann has condemned this shameful act of the health minister. He said “ the derogatory behavior of the minister as well as the stooping of the person of the stature of the Vice Chancellor is nothing less than a curse on the noble profession in particular and society, in general’
Dr DS Bhullar and some other members of the teaching faculty at Govt Medical College, Patiala said “we should show protest against today’s incident at Faridkot. The doctors will wear black badges tomorrow to lodge their protest.’

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has also condemned the shameful and humiliating behaviour of the Health and Medical Education Minister Chetan Singh Jauramajra with the Vice Chancellor of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Dr Raj Bahadur an eminent doctor of international repute.
“The minister probably forgot that he was holding the constitutional position as a minister and was not a mobster the way he behaved”, he remarked in a strongly worded statement here today, while asking the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to immediately make his minister to apologise for his insulting manner with the Vice Chancellor and restore the confidence and morale of the medical fraternity which was feeling completely demoralised by this incident.
“We are not living in a Taliban ruled Afghanistan but a civilized society and a democratic country and what the minister Jauramajra did is condemnable and unacceptable”, he said, while doubting whether anyone in his right senses would behave and act like that with a person who is as old as his father and has immense contribution towards improving the healthcare system in Punjab.
The PCC president said the minister had no right to make the Vice Chancellor lie down on a patient’s bed. “Not only is it unbecoming of the minister to behave like a mobster, but also it is medically unhealthy to make someone lie down, that too forcibly, on a sick person’s bed”, he added.
“If the minister thought that the responsibility to maintain cleanliness lay at the top, then it should be he (the minister) himself who should have owned the responsibility and laid down on the bed, as the buck should stop at the top, and not just at the VC?” Warring asked.
He pointed out, Dr Raj Bahadur was an internationally acclaimed and respected doctor and must be Jauramajra’s father’s age and to treat him like that was atrociously shameful. “Not only should the minister apologise to Dr Raja Bahadur but to the entire medical fraternity, which is feeling shattered and demoralised over this shameful incident with one of their most respected and senior colleagues”, he said.
