CM gave major responsibility to Dr BC Roy awardee, renowned cardiologist Dr Gurpreet Singh Wander

Punjab chief minister has once again given a major responsibility to Dr Gurpreet Singh Wander, an illustrious medico as the Chairman of the Board of Management of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot.
Earlier, CM Mann had appointed him as the vice chancellor of the BFUHS in September 2022. But after the Punjab Governor raised his objections on his appointment, Dr Wander himself refused to join the university as VC.
CM Mann in his tweet announced, “Many congratulations to renowned Dr. Gurpreet Singh Wander for becoming the Chairman of the Board of Management of Baba Farid University Faridkot. All the members of the board deserve congratulations.. Hope the new management will take the University to new heights.”

Dr Gurpreet Singh Wander, did his schooling from Modern Secondary School (Now, Modern Senior Secondary School), Patiala ,passed MBBS with Honours (with more than 70% marks in each subject) and was the Second Best Graduate of the University. During graduation was awarded Merit Scholarship and 3 Silver Medals for 1st Position in Medicine, Eye, ENT and Forensic Medicine and 2 Bronze Medals for 2nd position in 2nd and final professionals. was Captain and Champion College Table Tennis Team and was awarded Institute Colour at PGI for Table Tennis. Passed MD and DM in Cardiology both from PGIMER, Chandigarh and thereafter worked for 8 months as a Senior Resident till August, 1988.
Joined Dayanand Medical College on 1st Sept., 1988 as Lecturer Cardiology Unit. Being one of the first few cardiologists in North India to start cardiac specialized services in the region started cardiology unit at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana in 1988 and gradually procedures like Treadmill Testing, Color Doppler Echocardiography, Stress Echocardiography and Temporary and Permanent Pacemaker Implantation were introduced. Was Instrumental in planning, developing and setting up Hero DMC Heart Institute at Ludhiana in year 2001,a tertiary cardiac care centre with 170 bedded cardiac facility having two cath labs and five operating rooms.
In last around three decades , he have been involved in research actively and have published 106 Papers, 45 of them in Foreign Journals of repute like The Lancet,Nature Genetics, Journal of American College of Cardiology, American Journal of Cardiology, British Heart Journal and Japanese Heart Journal. 115 papers have been presented in National and International Conferences.Have contributed thirty six chapters in books.Have authored 3 books as editor and sub-editor.Have conducted few animal experimental studies on atherogenicity of oxidized cholesterol and a British collaborative study on Coronary Heart Disease. Have been co supervisor of 45 MD thesis in these 28years.
Awarded Dr. K. Sharan Cardiology Excellence award by IMA India for year 2004. Awarded Dr. Edith Brown Memorial Award for Health and Medical Science by the Sabhyacharak Society. Delivered guest lectures at International meets in Pakistan, Mauritius, Indonesia, Malaysia etc. Awarded Dr. B.C Roy National Award for the year 2006 for Development of Specialties from Pratibha Patil, President of India on 1st July 2008.
Presently working as Professor and Head of Cardiology, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital and Co-ordinator of Hero DMC Heart Institute, which is a unit of Dayanand Medical College & Hospital. The centre has been functional for sixteen years and today serves patients from all over the state and adjoining states. The Cardiology department is actively doing all cardiac intervention procedures like Coronary Angioplasty, Primary Angioplasty, Renal, Carotid and Peripheral Angioplasty, Pacemakers, AICD Implantations and Device Closure of septal defects.The department runs Medical Council of India approved DM programme in Cardiology (3 seats per year) and has MCh programme in cardiac surgery. It is one of the busiest cardiac department in north India.
