Dhillon brother suicide case -SHO who humiliated the deceased, booked for abetting suicide

Over a fortnight after brothers Manavjit Singh Dhillon ,40 years and Jashanbir Singh Dhillon, 36 years residents of Jalandhar, reportedly jumped into Beas river from the Goindwal bridge following alleged harassment by the SHO of police station 1 Navdeep Singh, lady constable Jagjit Kaur and ASI Balwir Kumar of Jalandhar police, the Kapurthala police have finally booked the accused police officials.

The family of the brothers runs a school and a hospital in Punjab.

Today, a FIR has been registered against SHO of police station 1 Jalandhar Navdeep Singh, lady constable Jagjit Kaur and ASI Balwir Kumar at Talwandi Chaudhrian police station in Kapurthala for abetment to suicide. The trio has been booked under Section 306, 506 and 34 of the IPC.

On Saturday, one of the deceased Jashanbir’s body, was recovered from the fields near the banks of River Beas 16 days after the incident, has been sent for postmortem to the Sultanpur Lodhi Civil Hospital. His body was identified by his 70-year-old father Jatinder Pal Singh Dhillon. While the body of the other brother has not been traced yet.

As per available information, the tragedy occurred a day after Manavjit Singh along with a few others visited a police station in Jalandhar to attend a meeting concerning a matrimonial dispute involving the sister of one of their friends on August 14 and 16,2023. Later in the day (August 16), Manavjit Singh was summoned by the SHO divison number 1, Jalandhar and an altercation ensued between them. The SHO reportedly slapped,assaulted  Manavjit Singh, causing his turban to fall off, and he also beat him up. The latter was detained overnight and released on bail only after furnishing security bonds.

“Jashanbir Singh, brother of Manavjit Singh took this incident to heart. The following evening,  Jashanbir left without informing anyone. Manavjit called Jashanbir and he answered the call. Jashanbir said that Manavjit was subjected to humiliation by the SHO, and he could not bear it, and so he was considering jumping into the river. Manavjit Singh along with Manvdeep Singh reached Goindwal Sahib Bridge and tried to console Jashanbir Singh to not to take this incident to his heart. But Jashanbir Singh jumped into the river, and in a desperate attempt to save his brother, Manavjit Singh, too, dived in and both washed away due to the strong current of water.”

Later the SHO Navdeep Singh was transferred to police lines from the Jalandhar police station. But the family kept on demanding the registration of an FIR against him as well as his dismissal ever since the brothers jumped into the Beas.
