Chairman National Commission for Minorities Iqbal Singh Lalpura felicitated with Honorary Doctorate by Guru Kashi University

In recognition of the yeoman’s service rendered in the social service as well as the literary sectors, the Chairman, National Commission for Minorities Iqbal Singh Lalpura was felicitated with an Honorary Doctorate by the Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo in an impressive ceremony held at the university.

It is noteworthy that Iqbal Singh Lalpura hails from Rupnagar District and is serving as Chairman, National Commission for Minorities in the rank of Cabinet Minister. Besides, he is also a Member of the Central Parliamentary Board of the world’s largest party, BJP.

Born in a middle class farmer family on 7th of February, 1953 in village Lalpura near Sri Anandpur Sahib, he had his early education from Chandigarh. He Graduated from DAV College, Chandigarh and is a Law Graduate. He was a keen sportsman and played Football at University level .

Starting his career in 1972 as a police officer and then progressed to become an IPS officer and discharged his duties with distinction in the areas as sensitive as Amritsar as S.P. CID (1987-1996) and Hoshiarpur. In 1989, he was awarded Indian Police Medal for meritorious services which was followed in 1998 by the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished ServiceHe was even Approached/ commended by Punjab Government and Police Department commended for displaying extremely high level of professional dedication and honesty.

He also served FBI in USA as an expert on militancy and commanded 4 Districts i.e. Amritsar (Urban), Amritsar (Rural), Tarn Taran and Kapurthala for almost 10 year

Coming to the literary sphere, Iqbal Singh Lalpura made a mark here too as is evident from the Shiromani Sahitkar award in 2006 conferred by the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) and Sri Akal Takht Sahib on the occasion of the 400th martyrdom day of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. It was he who began the project of cleaning the Kali Bein River in Kapurthala in 1997-98 and in January 2000 was instrumental in ensuring that the fresh water flows from Buddhu Barkat Canal into Bein river. He was honoured with ‘The Sikh of the Year’ award in 2017 by the Chief Khalsa Diwan.

An author of repute, Iqbal Singh Lalpura has penned 22 books on the theme of Sikh history and philosophy with a majority of them being the original creations and the rationale behind them is to spread the message of universal love, respect and understanding towards other religion. His son Ajayveer Singh stated that his father had humble beginnings as he rose from a modest house in the backward area, deprived of the love of his father Sarwan Singh Lalpura who had passed away, and rose to become IPS Officer and afterwards attaining Cabinet rank in the Union Government. All this became possible due to the blessings of Almighty Akalpurkh and the support of his family including his better half Hardeep Kaur, Daughter Jasmine Kaur Nijjar.
