Amity to set up Science Focused University in Mohali

Encouraged by the new favourable investment environment in Punjab and the increased thrust of the state government on education, the Amity University has proposed to set up a state-of-the-art university in Mohali.

A delegation of the university led by President, Amity Education Group, Dr. Atul Chauhan met Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh here on Thursday and shared their plans to set up a campus for 20,000 students at a total investment to the tune of Rs 1000-1500 crores.

Giving details of the meeting, an official spokesperson said the delegation plans to set up the university over 50 acres of land in Mohali, for which they had already been shown some sites in and around Mohali. The final site was yet to be finalised, the delegation apprised the Chief Minister.

Amity was looking at setting up a Science-focused university, with a multi-disciplinary approach, the delegation informed the Chief Minister, adding that they proposed to offer flexibility in structuring of courses as per the requirements of the students.

The proposed university would have a state-of-the-art campus with a large residential student population, said the delegation. They further told Captain Amarinder that they had been receiving a large number of requests from parents of many of their existing students from Punjab for a campus in the state and seeing the huge potential in the region, backed by the investor-friendly policies of the new government, had decided to take up the issue on priority.

The Chief Minister directed the Education Department and the Housing Department to take the proposal forward and extend all support to Amity to ensure the best possible deal for the students of Punjab.

The Amity delegation comprised President, Amity Education Group, Dr. Atul Chauhan, Sr. Vice President Amity Group U. Ramachandran, Asst Vice President Amity Education Group Gauravh Gupta, Director and Projects Amity Education Group Ashish Singh.

Others present at the meeting included Senior Advisor to Chief Minister Lt. Gen (Retd.) TS Shergill, Media Advisor to Chief Minister Raveen Thukral, Chief Secretary Karan Avtar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Housing and Urban Development Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Tejveer Singh and Principal Secretary Finance Anirudh Tiwari.
