Today morning Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) president Sukhbir Singh Badal shared a conference call audio of around 17 minutes on his social media platform X (earlier twitter) accusing Patiala senior superintendent of police Varun Sharma and his team for making strategy, conspiracy to deter opposition candidates from filing nomination papers for the December 14 zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections.

As per the audio shared by Sukhbir Singh Badal, “the SSP Patiala Varun Sharma starts his talk by naming IG Kaustubh Sharma who is appointed as the election observer, Vinay Bublani, IAS, commissioner Patiala division, DC, Patiala Preeti Yadav, IAS along with him were present in the meeting. After that Sharma start briefing his juniors how to manage the nomination filing process.”

As per Sukhbir Singh Badal, the said audio is of Varun Sharma, IPS, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Patiala in which Sharma is instructing his juniors-superintendent of police (SPs), DSPs, SHOs to remain alert today (December 4,2025) , stop the opposition candidates, leaders outside the villages, their residences, en-route wherever possible so that they can’t reach to file their nomination papers as it is a last date to file nomination for zila parishad, block samiti elections.”. He further added that ” tie up with your MLAs for this.”

The SAD supremo said “the SSP asked the DSPs to acknowledge his orders. Every DSP shared the situation of their area. Even a DSP takes the name of PRTC Chairman Ranjodh Singh Hadana that he is happy, satisfied with Patiala Police working in managing the issue”.

It is alleged that “ when an officer asked SSP Patiala Varun Sharma, to send extra police force as Sukhbir Singh Badal is expected to visit Ghanour, the SSP said “ he was deputy chief minister around 10 years ago. So there is no need to extra security. Sharma further added that ” do your task and if anything happens, don’t worry, i’ll send positive report.”

Later the SAD filed a complaint with State Election Commission to suspend the officers involved and initiate a probe. The party, he said, was prepared to submit recordings, transcripts and witness accounts as evidence.

After this SAD leader Daljeet Singh Cheema filed an application with Punjab and Haryana High Court alleging misuse of police machinery to subvert the electoral process. The government opposed the PIL claiming that it was“political interest litigation”. But, in the post lunch session, the chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court heard the case and directed the SEC to file a reply and they will hear the case on Monday.

The police, however, rejected the allegations. SSP Sharma said in a statement that the video and audio being shared online were “fake AI-generated content” created “with malicious intent to mislead the public and disturb law and order”. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible and appealed to the citizens not to believe disinformation. “We remain committed to ensuring free and fair elections,” he said.

After the incident, Patiala police have also registered an FIR under the Information Technology Act against unidentified individuals for allegedly circulating an AI-generated video and audio clip on social media, portraying the SSP and other police officials in a conference call.

SSP Patiala Varun Sharma didn’t respond to repeated calls and messages.
