On July 11,2023, deputy chief engineer, water regulations , Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) had written a letter to the three deputy commissioners of Punjab namely Ropar, Ludhiana, Ferozepur, SDMs of Nangal, Anandpur Sahib along with Punjab’s drainage department officials, informing about the board’s decision of releasing 16,000 cusecs of water, due to heavy inflow from catchment areas along with the 19,000 cusecs of water already releasing by the board on July 13,2023.

After this the Punjab government officials , including principal secretary water resources met the BBMB officials and requested them to “not to release the extra water in the Satluj as the Dhussi Bandh on Sutlej river breaches. Due to this water entered in over three dozen villages of Jalandhar and Kapurthala districts, flooding into houses and inundating thousands of acres of fields. Villages  under Shahkot sub-division sub-merged under water. If the board releases any extra water, as planned, it will add more worries to the residents of areas living adjoining the river Satluj.”

Acceding to Punjab’s demand, the officials of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) postponed their plan to release 16000 cusecs of water in the Satluj.

BBMB acceded to Punjab govt request; withdraw its order of releasing 16K cusecs water in Satluj . As per BBMB officials, “Punjab govt wanted the postponement of water releasing exercise. They also want a time to repair the damaged Dhussi Bandh on Satluj river.”

As per BBMB officials, “the board committee will meet after three days and then they will look in the situation, water level in the dam and other aspects. If needed, than they will take decision about the need, quantity of water to be released in the river Satluj.”

As per BBMB’s plan, “ the said water was going to be released from the turbines, generating electricity and no floodgates were going to be opened by the Bhakra Beas Management Board.”
