Central University of Punjab celebrated Matribhasha Diwas 2023

To spread awareness about linguistic and cultural diversity, and to promote multilingualism, the Central University of Punjab Bathinda (CUPB) celebrated Matribhasha Diwas (International Mother Language Day) on Tuesday with enthusiasm and zeal. On this occasion, a special program was conducted by the School of Languages, Literature and Culture, CUP under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, to celebrate the multilingual heritage of India, reflecting the spirit of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.” In this programme, students of CUPB showcase the linguistic richness and diversity of India through artistic performances in more than 18 languages of India.

In the beginning, Dr. Ramanpreet Kaur, Head, Dept. of Punjabi, welcomed the participants and introduced the programme theme. She highlighted that the university is making its best efforts to promote multilingual education in line with the United Nations’ theme for the 2023 International Mother Language Day, i.e., “Multilingual education—a necessity to transform education.” Dr. Kulbhushan Sharma from the Department of Hindi talked about the significance of this day. Students from the Department of Punjabi, Hindi and English moderated the stage during the programme.

During this programme, 32 performances were held in the form of singing, poetry recitation, elocution, gazals, and speeches. CUPB students exhibited mesmerising performances in 18 languages such as Odia, Kannada, Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Hindi, Maithili, Malayalam, Haryanvi, Ladakhi, Rajasthani, Dogri, Bagheli, Khadi Boli, Avdhi, Bhojpuri, and Asamiya etc.

On this occasion, Prof. Anjana Munshi, Director, Research and Development was the chief guest. She stated that the Central University of Punjab is also known as “Mini India,” as students from more than 27 states are studying here. This cultural exchange programme has provided our students with an opportunity to represent their culture and understand the culture of other states. She thanked everyone for making this programme a success. During this programme, students and faculty from various departments of the university, including all the three language departments, were present.

Central University of Punjab celebrated Matribhasha Diwas 2023. Apart from cultural exchange programme, a discussion session was organized in the Department of Punjabi on the theme of International Mother Language Day i.e. “Multilingual education—a necessity to transform education.” Research Scholars of the department presented their views about the role of multilingual education and its importance in the context of Punjabi language. Students and Faculty of the Punjabi department participated in this programme.
