Patiala Unit of Punjab State Medical & Dental Teachers Association has strongly objected to the allegations of district Health department that medical staff of Rajindra Hospital Patiala is not adhering to the safety guidelines and violating the safety protocol.

In a joint press release, Dr DS Bhullar President and Dr Darshanjit Singh Walia General Secretary of the Association said that Rajindra Hospital has an open access for the public from all sides in the OPDs (outpatient departments), wards and even in emergency and in the absence of availability of sufficient staff, it is not possible to streamline the entry of general public, and the medical staff is being exposed to potential Covid sources all times and from all sides in the hospital premises.

Criticizing the letter issued by Medical Superintendent of Rajindra Hospital endorsing the orders of Civil Surgeon Patiala, the association leaders said the office order is demoralizing for the doctors and staff on duties round the clock and should be immediately withdrawn being in bad shape for directly fixing the responsibility of the doctors getting infected by Covid-19 while performing their professional duties and which may have strong negative percussions in future.

The faculty feels it unwanted interference in the functioning of Rajindra Hospital which is a tertiary level care centre receiving all types of cases even when the hospitals in the city directly under control of the health department are not treating corona patients. The district health authorities should stop blaming and shaming the doctors and medical staff of Rajindra Hospital which is demoralizing and misuse of the powers under the pandemic.

The duty of the doctors and medical staff is to focus on the treatment of patients and precautionary measures for the public and potentials sources of infection coming to the hospital is to be looked after by the hospital administration which has dragged its feet by issuing such dictatorial orders and shifting responsibility.

Keeping in view the prevailing situation in the state and recent surge of positive cases in medical staff of the hospital, Government should designate either Rajindra Hospital or Mata Kaushayala Hospital in Patiala as COVID Hospital to segregate treatment of corona related and normal patients to protect people and the medical staff from potential covid suspects. Making a strong appeal to Chief Minister Punjab Capt. Amrinder Singh, faculty of medical college has demanded that either Rajindra Hospital or Mata Kaushayala Hospital in Patiala should be converted into COVID Hospital immediately.
