Cleanliness campaign initiated by Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Singh Walia in Rupnagar is continuing at war footing, and work has commenced under a special action plan to develop Rupnagar as a model city on the lines of Indore.

Deputy Commissioner stated that Indore, a prominent city in Madhya Pradesh, has been consistently ranked first in cleanliness surveys for several years. This is not merely a matter of luck or coincidence but the result of joint efforts by the administration, citizens, and local institutions, where 100% door-to-door garbage collection is carried out, and citizens fulfill their responsibilities diligently.

He added that Indore became the cleanest city through a multi-faceted approach, focusing on waste management, citizen participation, and technological advancements. Key strategies included the scientific disposal of waste, implementation of modern waste management practices, and educating citizens about the importance of proper garbage segregation and cleanliness.

Deputy Commissioner emphasized that this is not just a campaign, but a long-term vision aimed at establishing Rupnagar as one of the cleanest cities in Punjab.

On this occasion, MLA Advocate Dinesh Chadha said that in the next phase of the campaign, not just the municipal council, but local institutions, schools, and social service organizations etc will also be involved. Under this initiative, not only will systematic waste management be ensured, but citizens will also be made aware of the need to segregate waste at home.

He further stated that the transformation of the city is only possible with the cooperation of its residents, and for that, it is crucial that people stop littering roads, parks, and public places, and discourage others from doing so as well. There will be strict monitoring and enforcement, with penalties imposed where garbage is dumped improperly. A CCTV-based surveillance system will also be used to maintain oversight.
