A one day workshop was organized at Guru Kashi University (GKU) on “Recent Trends in Mechanical and Material Engineering”. Prof Gary W. Rankin (Fluid Dynamics Research Institute, Windsor, Canada) and Dr J. Karthikeyan , Dir Research & Dev (ASB Industries, Inc., Barberton, Ohio, USA) could find time to be at GKU delivered their expert talks.
“Mechanical engineers design and fabricate machines and devices that enable us to live and work in space, in the air, on the ground, and under water” said Prof Rankin adding that their machines can extend our physical capabilities, improve our health and standard of living, and impact the environment in which we live. This is why engineers and material scientists work intimately with the goal of tailoring not only the mechanical, but also chemical and electrical properties of materials to make new applications possible, he said.
Dr Karthikeyan elaborated the technology of plasma and the implications of thermal sprays. He said that cold spray technology, on which he is the authority, can serve useful applications in wide variety of fields cutting across engineering, biotechnology, agriculture, electronics and acoustics. He motivated students to peep out of their comfort zones and follow their dreams in chosen areas of profession, with passion.
The GKU Vice Chancellor Col Dr B S Dhaliwal welcomed the experts and al participants while the Registrar Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman proposed his vote of thanks while highlighting the core areas of discussion. Prominent among the present were Dr Jagpal Singh, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr Narinder Singh, Director Finance, Dr RK Bansal, Dean Research, Dr G S Brar, Dean of the College of Engineering & Technology, GKU and Deans, Directors, heads of Department, faculty members and students from various constituent colleges of GKU. The expert speakers were presented with GKU mementoes and shawls. Later, they were shown around the campus landmarks.
