GNDU awarded 2 Crore cash,trophies to 700 players

Amritsar-At the 48th Annual Sports Prize Distribution Function  for the year 2017-18 of the Guru Nanak Dev University honored its 700 outstanding players who brought laurels to the University in various sports disciplines at the International, National and All India Inter-Varsity levels with cash prizes worth Rs. 2 Crore and trophies. 

Rahul Bhatnagar, IAS,  Secretary Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India was the chief guest Dr. Gurdeep Singh, Joint Secretary, AIU, New Delhi was the guest of honor. Lalit Sharma, Director Incharge Sports Authority was also present. Vice Chancellor Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu preside over the function., Dr. Kamaljit Singh, Dean Academic Affairs Prof. K.S. Kahlon, Registrar & other officials and coaches were also present at this occasion.

Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Director Sports read out the Annual Sports Achievements Report. Dr. Gurpinder Singh Samra, President, Guru Nanak Dev University Sports Committee (Men) & Principal Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar welcomed the guests. Dr. Mrs. Ajay Sareen, President GNDU Sports Committee (Women) and  Principal,HMV College, Jalandhar presented vote of thanks. Eminent international player Navdeep Kaur Dhillon also encourged sports personal to work hard with dedication to excel in sports.

While congratulating the winners, Bhatnagar said that we should develop sports culture in our country for the construction of healthy society. He said that now the mindset of general masses has been changed for sports. Even parents and well wishers also suggesting their wards to take sports for their overall development.He said that today Governments are providing special quota in civil services and other facilities and funds for the development of sports. He said that in all physical education and sports schools more emphasis will be given to practical training along with theory, the ratio will be 70 percent practical and 30 percent theory.

He said that under “Khelo India” program, one thousand children will be selected on the basis of their game and talentfrom schools till January 2019. They will be given Rs. five lakh as scholarship at various stages to get training in the game of their choice.

Prof. Sandhu said that sports is the vital part of student’s life. He said that all students should participate in sports activities along with their formal studies. He said that maximum efforts should be done to attract youth towards sports, so that healthy nation could be build.  He also thanked Bhatnagar for sanctioning MYAS Centre and grant of Rs. 25 crore to the University.  They also visited MYAS-GNDU Department of Sports Sciences and Medicine. 

In Men section Khalsa College, Amritsar lifted the Guru Nanak Dev University Inter-College ‘A’ Division Overall General Championship Trophy (Men) while Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar remained runners-up and DAV College Amritsar finished third. In Men category in ‘B’ Division SSM College Dina Nagar was Winner and GGS Khalsa College Sarhalai was Runners-up while SGAD Khadoor Sahib remained third.

In Women section, BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar lifted the GND University Inter-College ‘A’ Division Overall General Championship Trophy while HMV Jalandhar remained runners-up and Khalsa College, Amritsar finished third. In ‘B’ Division SDSPM (W) College Rayya was Winner and GN College Sarhali was Runners-up and SN College Amritsarfinished third in women category.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh Yadgari Trophy for the Year 2016-17 went to Khalsa College Amritsar and Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar remained second.
