The Health Committee and NSS wings of government degree college Ganderbal, (J&K) in collaboration with Paras Hospital, Srinagar, on Wednesday organized an awareness program on “Tobacco use and its serious Health Concerns”. The event aimed to educate students about the severe physical and mental health consequences associated with the use of  tobacco .

The program was formally inaugurated by Prof. Fouzia Fatima, Principal, Government Degree College Ganderbal, who delivered a warm welcome address. She stressed the importance of understanding the risks of tobacco. She urged students to become advocates for healthy lifestyles and to spread awareness among their peers and community.

Dr. Khalid, a renowned expert from Paras Hospital, delivered the keynote address. He highlighted the alarming rise in tobacco consumption, especially among young people, and its link to various chronic diseases, including oral cancer, respiratory ailments, heart diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Dr. Sabrina Qadri, a psychiatrist, emphasized the connection between mental health and physical well-being. She discussed the role of social connectedness and healthy habits in promoting mental health and preventing substance abuse. Dr. Sabrina Qadri also shared practical tips for a happier and healthier life, such as practicing gratitude, mindfulness, and acts of kindness.

Govt Degree College Ganderbal (J&K) organises awareness programme. The program concluded with a Question & Answer (Q&A)  session, where students and faculty engaged with the experts. Dr. Khalid and Dr. Sabrina provided insightful answers and offered valuable advice.

Over 90 students attended the event and it was moderated by Dr. Mansha Nisar , NSS program Officer. Dr. Shaheena Akhter, convener of the health committee, delivered the formal vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to the resource persons and participants. Dr. Rumana Mattoo and Prof. Uqba Yousuf served as rapporteurs for the program.
