The Patiala District Administration is thrilled to announce a momentous occasion as Patiala becomes the first district in the country to adopt the “Right to Walk” policy. Nestled in the heart of Punjab, Patiala is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance. This visionary policy not only emphasizes the safety and convenience of pedestrians and cyclists but also highlights the district’s commitment to preserving its heritage character.
Sakshi Sawhney, Deputy Commissioner, Patiala, conveyed her immense joy, stating, “I am honoured to announce the launch of the ‘Patiala Right to Walk’ Policy, as Patiala becomes the first district in the country to adopt this ground-breaking initiative. This policy is a significant milestone in our relentless efforts to prioritize the well-being and convenience of pedestrians and cyclists. It is a testament to the state government’s recognition of the ‘Right to Walk’ as an integral part of the right to a healthy life under Article 21 of the Constitution. We assure you that this commitment is not just on paper; you will witness its swift translation into reality on the ground. We are dedicated to creating a district where walking and cycling are embraced as fundamental aspects of a healthy, sustainable, and vibrant lifestyle, and we are starting it with footpath cum cycle track around the Gurudwara DukhNiwaran Sahib”.
The Deputy Commissioner said that the District administration will implement this policy with the special support of cabinet ministers Balbir Singh and Chetan Singh Jaudamajra and MLAs Ajitpal Singh Kohli, Neena Mittal, Gurdev Singh Dev Mann, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, Gurlal Ghanour and Kulwant Singh. The “Right to Walk” policy is a collaborative effort between the Patiala District Administration, the Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre, S.A.S. Nagar, and various other government agencies. Senior Superintendent of Police, Varun Sharma, emphasized the significance of the policy in ensuring the safety and security of pedestrians and cyclists, stating, “As the custodian of law and order, the Patiala Police is fully committed to ensuring the well-being of our citizens. With the ‘Patiala Right to Walk’ Policy, we aim to create a harmonious coexistence between heritage preservation and the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.”
Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Patiala, Aaditya Uppal, highlighted the district’s rich heritage and its integration with the “Right to Walk” policy, saying, “Patiala District is blessed with a glorious past, and it is our responsibility to safeguard our heritage while fostering a culture of walking and cycling. Through this policy, we aim to create an environment where residents and visitors can experience the heritage charm of Patiala while enjoying safe and accessible pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.”
District Road Safety Officer, Swinder Brar, Research Associate, PRSTRC, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Patiala District is a true gem, known for its heritage and cultural significance. The launch of the ‘Patiala Right to Walk’ Policy marks a significant step forward in our journey towards creating a pedestrian-friendly district that prioritizes the safety of its residents.
