National Science Day celebrated at MRSPTU; Prof. Vipin Kumar Tripathi inspires students

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda celebrated ‘National Science Day-2020’ under “Mission Innovative Punjab” on the theme ‘Women in Science’ at Conference Hall here on Friday. The students celebrated the day with great zeal and enthusiasm.

National Science Day (NSD) is celebrated every year to commemorate discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’, which led to Sir C.V. Raman winning the Noble Prize. The theme has been chosen for the purpose of raising public appreciation of the scientific issues and spotlights the role of women in science.

Former IIT, Delhi Professor Vipin Kumar Tripathi, a leading social scientist activist, who is known as “The Pamphlet Man” and fighting hate on national capital streets  was chief guest on the occasion.

It may be mentioned here that renowned scientist at the age of 72 is spreading the message of love and peace. He’s battling hate on the streets of Delhi and inspiring people all around. It was the Bhagalpur riots of 1989 and other communal violence incidents across the country that instigated the physicist to plunge into scientific social activism.

In his key note address, renowned Plasma Physicist Prof. Tripathi inspired the students in promoting scientific temper and shared the significance of scientific applications in our daily life with practical examples. He further emphasized that everything in the world follows a rule and the true aim of science is to find these rules and make it comprehensible to the human mind and positive use for the human being. He explained the students about the role and responsibilities of scientists in the present scenario. He said scientist’s role ‘should be for the progress of human civilisation, while cautioning them against developing and researching anti human inventions/weapons.

Speaking on the occasion, MRSPTU, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar said defined science as systematically accumulated knowledge with logical argumentation. Prof. Ishar underlined that beauty of science is that it thrives by opposition.  He said science is ‘reasoned knowledge and the Scientific Temper represent a spirit of query and as such involves the process of logical reasoning and creativity. He stressed upon the need to implement new technologies for the development of the science and provide opportunities to the scientific minds of our country for a sustainable future. He appreciated the organisers and said that these type of activities and scientific thinking among students leading to development of their overall personality and excellence in all spheres.

MRSPTU, Dean, Research and Development cum head of Physics department, Dr. Jasbir Singh Hundal said that National Science Day is an occasion to remember the dedication, determination and untiring efforts of our scientists, who are India’s pride. “We salute the brilliance & long-lasting contribution of Sir CV Raman to the field of science, who received the Nobel Prize for this remarkable discovery in 1930,” he specified. He said Scientists like Dr.   Raman should be our role models and asked the students to follow them.

The Department of Physics in collaboration with Punjab State Council for Science and Technology and NCSTC, department of Science and Technology, Government of India organized the National Science Day, where various activities including Quiz, women innovation contest, poster presentation, oral presentations and debate competition etc. were organized. Large number of teachers, research scholars and science students participated with great zest and zeal.

Prominent among those present on the occasion include, GZSCCET, Director, Dr. Savina Bansal, University Registrar, Dr. Ashish Baldi, Deans/Directors and Heads of various Departments.

Detailed results of Competitions:

Women Innovation Contest  Dr. Smriti won first position, while Garima Shama and Shilpa Kumari secured second and third positions respectively.

Similarly in Poster Presentation Piyush won  first, while Saurav Gautam second and Pankaj third.

In Oral Presentation  Tarupreet Singh secured  first position, while Pardeep Kumar second and Amritpal Singh third place.

In Research (Oral) Kamaldeep Kaur  got first position and Priya Dhuria secured  second place.

In Debate Shivam Kumar got  first position, while Jagmeet and Sahil secured second place.
