NIELIT Deemed University formally launched by union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

The National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) ,Deemed to be University (distinct category) with its main campus at Rupnagar and all 11 (eleven) constituent units at Aizawl, Ajmer, Agartala, Aurangabad, Calicut, Gorakhpur, Imphal, Kohima, Patna, Itanagar, Srinagar was formally launched virtually from Guwahati on 3rd January 2025 by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Railways and Information & Broadcasting, Govt. of India in the august presence of Lakshman Acharya, Governor,Assam and Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister, Assam & other dignitaries.
The virtual launch of the University was attended at NIELIT Rupnagar by Dinesh Kumar Chadha, MLA, Ropar, Addl. District Commissioners, Ropar, academicians from nearby institutions along with many other dignitaries, officers and students of NIELIT Deemed University.
While launching the NIELIT Deemed to be University, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw greeted all the local MPs and MLAs in virtual attendance at different campuses of the NIELIT Deemed University. He informed that this milestone establishes NIELIT as the first and only MeitY organization to achieve Deemed to be University status. He emphasized the university’s pivotal role in preparing students for employability in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This initiative will bridge the gap between academia and industry, equipping colleges to train students for future challenges. It is a significant stride towards realizing the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to break the shackles of slavery in the education system and for a digitally empowered and skilled India. This recognition reflects NIELIT’s steadfast commitment to excellence in Electronics, Information Technology, and Communication Technology and aligns with Prime Minister’s goals of fostering innovation, Digital India and Make in India initiatives, and delivering world-class education and training.
Chief Minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarmasaid in his address that the launch of NIELIT Deemed University from the Ashtalakshmi Bhoomi was the most important event as technology evolution will only take India forward towards the Developed Nation status.
Lakshman Acharya, Governor of Assam, lauded the initiative, highlighting its potential to benefit the youth across the country. He remarked, NIELIT University will open doors to learning and innovation in cutting-edge fields such as cyber security, block chain technology, and semiconductor manufacturing, paving the way for India’s technological leadership.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof.(Dr.) M.M. Tripathi, Vice-Chancellor of NIELIT Deemed University, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, stakeholders, and attendees for their support and participation. He thanked Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Railways and Information & Broadcasting for his unwavering support to the NIELIT for bridging the gap between industry and academia, and assured that NIELIT will make all out efforts to realize the expectations of the nation.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also exchanged between Prof. (Dr.) M.M. Tripathi, Vice-Chancellor, NIELIT Deemed University and Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Electronics underscoring the commitment to synergizing industry expertise and academic excellence for transformative education and skill development.
Starting from the 2024-25 academic session, Rupnagar Campus of NIELIT Deemed University is offering a range of programs including PhD degrees in three areas, five M.Tech programs (IoT and Sensor Systems, Automotive Electronics, Cyber Forensics & Information Security, Data Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence), one B.Tech program (AI and ML), MSc (Specialisation in Data Science), MCA, and a three-year Diploma in Computer Science and Engineering. More programmes will be added in the coming academic session.
With its new status as a deemed university, NIELIT gains increased autonomy and flexibility in developing and offering Industry oriented programs that address the evolving needs of industry and society. This status fosters collaboration with leading academic institutions and industry partners, enhancing our educational ecosystem and improving employability prospects for graduates.This recognition not only celebrates NIELIT’s legacy but also positions the institution to power future growth and technological advancement of the nation.
