Police arrested youngsters for spreading rumors on Covid 19

Beware-police is watching your social media activities, in this pandemic period. Spreading rumors about Covid19 and against Corona warriors proves costly for two Patiala youngsters. The arrest will send a tough message to all who spread the rumors.

Giving  more details, SSP  Patiala Vikram Jeet Duggal said that strict action would be taken against those who used social media to create misconceptions and spread rumors about COVID pandemic.Till now, District Police has registered 6 FIRs for spreading fake rumors regarding COVID including an FIR for attack on Doctors etc and 5 persons have been arrested in the above FIRs.

Patiala police has booked and arrested  a 22 years old  Sarbjot singh alias Sonu S/o Ghulwinder Singh  a resident of Gobind Nagar Patiala under section 188 IPC & 54 Disaster Management Act for posting a message in a Facebook group in Patiala regarding testing of COVID-19 in the villages and was creating misconceptions about the health department teams and Corona warriors who are going to field and seen spreading rumors regarding COVID-19 pandemic and he is also leveling false allegations against Corona warriors. Patiala police has lodged a FIR at civil lines police station and arrested the accused in this case and further investigation is being carried out.

In another case Patiala police has also booked and arrested Greesh Bhatt S/o Parmanand Bhatt R/o Ranjit Nagar, Patiala under section 188 IPC & 54 Disaster Management Act for uploading a video on social media platforms in which he is seen spreading rumors regarding COVID-19 pandemic and he is also leveling false allegations against Corona warriors. Patiala police has lodged a FIR at Tripuri police station and arrested the accused in this case and further investigation is being carried out.

“Normally people don’t verify the authenticity of the video or the rumors and start spreading it, as like they want to come first in this. These rumors create panic amongst resident and down the morale of the Corona warriors. We are passing through a tough period and spreading rumors creates the situation tougher” said Gurpreet a local resident.

Duggal appealed to the general public to cooperate with the teams of District Administration and Health Department for the success of the war being waged by the Punjab Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh against COVID-19. He asked residents to inform about such elements on our whatsapp portal (96468-00112) besides dialing helpline numbers 0175-2350550 and 62843-57500  for seeking any clarification about any issue with regard to COVID-19.
