As the country marks one year of Operation Sindoor, the night of May 7, 2025, continues to remain etched in memory across parts of northern India. On that night, as reports of drone sightings emerged across parts of Punjab, Rajasthan and Jammu, uncertainty spread across the region.

Among the locations under heightened alert was Bathinda, home to a strategic Indian Air Force base and situated roughly 50 kilometres from Vedanta Power’s Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL) plant in Punjab’s Mansa district. At a moment when tensions were escalating near the border, uninterrupted electricity became critical for households, hospitals, industries and essential infrastructure across Punjab.

Located around 125 kilometres from the international border, Vedanta Power’s TSPL is a 1,980 MW thermal power plant supplying nearly 35% of Punjab’s electricity demand. Despite heightened tensions in the region, the thermal asset maintained uninterrupted power generation, emerging as an example of how critical infrastructure systems operate under heightened security conditions.

Recent conflicts across the Middle East have increasingly demonstrated that energy infrastructure is no longer peripheral to national security, making Vedanta Power’s TSPL a significant example of how critical power systems prepare for continuity during periods of elevated risk.

During the high-alert phase, Vedanta Power’s TSPL activated a continuity and safety framework focused on maintaining stable operations while safeguarding employees, business partner teams and their families. Workforce deployment was optimised to retain only critical operational personnel on-site, while structured support was arranged for employees and families requiring relocation assistance.

Preparedness measures across the facility were simultaneously intensified. Blackout simulations, evacuation rehearsals and mock drills were conducted across operational zones during both day and night, alongside refresher sessions on emergency response and safe shutdown procedures. Additional landline systems, emergency contact protocols and communication readiness measures were also introduced to support uninterrupted coordination during the period.

The response was further supported through coordination with district administration officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, local police authorities and emergency services across Mansa and Bathinda districts. Enhanced police patrolling around the plant premises, healthcare tie-ups with nearby hospitals, ambulance readiness and logistical preparedness formed part of the broader response measures activated during the period.

Preparedness efforts also extended to workforce readiness. Awareness sessions on emergency response procedures, evacuation protocols and cybersecurity vigilance were conducted regularly for employees and operational teams, while essential food and canteen supplies were stocked in advance to support uninterrupted on-site operations.

As geopolitical uncertainties increasingly place greater focus on the resilience of critical infrastructure, the experience at Vedanta Power’s TSPL reflects the growing importance of operational preparedness, coordinated response systems and energy security in ensuring continuity during times of national sensitivity.

Beyond generating power, Vedanta Power’s TSPL has also emerged as an important contributor to the region’s broader socio-economic development. Over the past five years, the plant’s community initiatives have positively impacted nearly 3,00,000 lives across surrounding areas through interventions spanning healthcare, education, livelihoods and rural development, further strengthening the ecosystem and communities connected to the plant.
