Punjabi University gifts an App to deaf community on International Day of Sign Languages

At the times of COVID-19, when the whole world is fighting with this pandemic situation, a young research team from Punjabi University, Patiala has provided a learning solution to deaf people to keep their learning going on while sitting at their own places. The developers of the App, Dr. Williamjeet Singh from Computer Science and Engineering Department and his research scholar Amandeep Singh have prepared a creative App based on Indian Sign Language (ISL).

They have dedicated this App to the society on the special occasion of International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL), which is celebrated across the globe on 23rd September every year. The name of the App is World of Indian Sign Language (WISL), which connects the three spoken languages: Punjabi, Hindi and English with the Indian Sign Language. The unique feature of App provides an interface where user can choose any of the three spoken languages and then link with the sign language for further processing. Dr. Williamjeet Singh said that sign language is considered as mother tongue of deaf people which is different from other spoken languages of the world. He said that this App is helpful to teach and learn the elementary concepts in an easy and innovative way.

This App delivers a two-way solution: one to learn the basic signs and other to test the gained knowledge through multiple games.Five gaming modules with exclusive functionalities makes the App more attractive. Giving special thanks to Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, Dr. Singh also claimed that using this App, the people who are not deaf can also be benefited to learn sign language, which will make their communication with deaf people more feasible and effective. Dr. B.S. Ghuman, Vice Chancellor of Punjabi University congratulated the team for their efforts and commitment towards the betterment of deaf people. Dr. Raman Maini, HoD, CSE Department also praised the team for their untiring efforts. Col. Karaminder Singh, Secretary, Society for Welfare of the Handicapped, Patiala also appreciated the whole work and motivated the team for creating more such Apps in the future also.
