Punjab’s first Open University to share sign language material to all deaf students across Punjab free of cost-VC

    Punjab’s first Open University to share sign language material to all deaf students across Punjab free of cost-VC

    Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University, Patiala took a unique initiative today i.e. 23 September, 2022 on the eve of International Day of Sign Language.

    United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 23rd of September as “International Day of Sign Languages” to empower persons with disabilities.

    To mark this day special, JGND PSOU has decided to share sign language material like e-books and videos to all deaf students and their parents across Punjab free of cost.

    Videos are being uploaded on official website of the University which is provided by Bhagat Puran Singh School for Deaf, Pingalwara, Amritsar. The material consisting of more than 5000 videos will be made available shortly to all the deaf students, their parents and their spouses.

    The Vice-Chancellor of JGND PSOU, Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh informed that in JGND PSOU, efforts are being made to remove all barriers to education which may be due to time, space, money or any disability. We would like to bring opportunities of higher educational learning to all Divyangjan of Punjab.

    The special initiative by University is in continuation of its earlier efforts where the University is already providing free education to all differently abled students of Punjab. This agreement is a step forward in reaffirming University’s commitment towards achieving the goal of gross enrollment ratio of 50% at higher education level in Punjab, as envisaged by the NEP, 2020.

    Punjab’s first Open University to share sign language material to all deaf students across Punjab free of cost-VC  said with the availability of sign language books and videos, the Divyangjan learners can have access to education in the most flexible manners customized to address their special needs. The theme selected by “World Federation of the Deaf” for this year is “Sign language unite us”. “The initiative by JGND PSOU truly imbibes spirit of guiding mission of the University i.e. “Sarbat da bhalla”

      Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines / fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. 2. These Awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March / April every year. For the year 2026, the President has approved conferment of 131 Padma Awards including 2 duo cases (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one) as per list below. The list comprises 5 Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri Awards. 19 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 6 persons from the category of Foreigners / NRI / PIO / OCI and 16 Posthumous awardees.
