Reputed academician Jaspal Singh Sandhu gets extension as VC

Acting on the recommendation of the Punjab government, Punjab governor Banwari Lal Purohit has extended the tenure of Jaspal Singh Sandhu as vice-chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar for another six months.
An academician of repute Jaspal Singh was appointed as Vice Chancellors of Guru Nanak Dev University in August 2017 by Capt Amarinder Singh led congress government. In that year the state government had invited the applications for the first time. Sandhu got selected from number of applicants and was appointed as VC.
In August 2020 he got another three years extension as VC. Again in August 2023 he got six months extension.
During his tenure, University Grants Commission has granted “Category One” status to Guru Nanak Dev University, the only university to get this elite status in the region of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. The university got a score of 3.85 on 4.00 scale of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (accredited at highest level i.e. A++ and it has also been conferred with the status of “University with Potential for Excellence” by UGC. It s among Top Ten “High Performing State Public Universities” across India by MHRD.
It’s the first university of the region which introduced on-line admissions, on-line counselling for State Level Admissions, all the results have been computerized and OMR (Optical Magnetic Recognition) system,have computerized its examination and registration system. The students now have an all time access to their results through SMS service.
GNDU has been awarded the prestigious Maulana Abul Kalam Azad trophy for overall excellence in sports for record 25 times.
Guru Nanak Dev University Vice Chancellor Jaspal Singh Sandhu remained the Secretary, University Grants Commission (UGC), and professor in the Department of Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy in the GNDU, which was established in 2004 and the first Department of Sports Medicine in the Indian university system, before joining the Vice Chancellor of GNDU Amritsar, three years ago.
