Rift comes to fore between Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) general secretary, former MP and its senior leader Prem Singh Chandumajra and Harvider Singh Harpalpur over the party ticket, which is yet to be announced by party president Sukhbir Singh Badal.
As the party has not made any formal announcement on the candidature, the veteran leader has been holding meetings in the Ghanaur assembly constituency, which is the bone to contention.
Harvinder Singh Harpalpur, a senior SAD leader and former chairman Market Committee Patiala and chairman Khadi and village industries board Punjab, is a nephew of Prem Singh Chandumjra and cousin of MLA from Sanaur Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra.
Harpalpur is making claim over the party ticket, for the upcoming assembly elections, in Punjab.
Harpulpar said,” I’m the resident of Ghanaur constituency and I had nurtured this constituency. If Prem Singh Chandumajra is interested in fighting the assembly elections, he can fight from his home constituency- Rajpura assembly constituency. His village falls in Rajpura. He was actively involved in student politics. He became the President of P.M.N. College Students Union, Rajpura.”
Harpalpur further added that “the party must allot ticket to the local leader of the constituency as he/ she knows all the demographic problems, local issues and can solve them in real manner.”
When questioned,” if the party didn’t allot him party ticket, he said then I’ll go by the decision of my supporters.”
When contacted Prem Singh Chandumajra, over this issue, he said “every worker has the right to demand the party ticket. He (Harpalpur) can demand the ticket, It’s the party high command to decide.”
Even former MLA from Ghanaur Mukmailpur’s duo (husband -wife) also opposed the interference of Prem Singh Chandumajra in their constituency. They are also eyeing party ticket for Harpreet Kaur Mukhmailpur.
Last week farmers union protest against Prem Singh Chandumajra at Akkar village. Akkar village is located in Rajpura Tehsil of Patiala district.
Ghanaur is presently represented in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha by Congress MLA Madan Lal Jalalpur.
