Road Accident Black Spots of three districts of Punjab released

Reports on ‘Road Safety Analysis and Identification of Accident Black Spots’ for SAS Nagar, Rupnagar and Shri Fatehgarh Sahib was released jointly by Satish Chandra, I.A.S., Additional Chief Secretary (Home Affairs), Govternment of Punjab and  K.S Pannu, I.A.S., Director, Tandrust Punjab Mission.

The report has been prepared under Punjab Vision Zero Accident Project functioning under the umbrella of Tandrust Punjab Mission. It has been prepared to identify all the black spots in all the three districts and detail out the problems pertaining in these districts. The report sums up the data for past three years i.e from 2016 to 2018, informed Pannu.

The aim behind this exercise is to bring down the road fatalities in these districts and promote road safety in a holistic manner. There were altogether 165 Black spots that were identified in these three districts. Collectively, 2021 people lost their lives and 1961 were seriously injured in these three districts in past three years, he informed.

Pertinently, these three districts are on top of the list of most accident-prone districts of Punjab when calculated for per million population. Punjab has 155 fatalities per million population whereas SAS Nagar has 259, Rupnagar has 280 &  Shri Fatehgarh sahib has 264 fatalities per million Population. These districts have highest fatality  rate hence were taken up as priority under Punjab Vision Zero Accident Project,said Pannu.

He further divulged that the report comprises of micro level analysis of the districts which is helpful for the Police and administration to take necessary actions. The data analysed has been already submitted to SSPs and DCs of these three districts to inform concerned authorities to take appropriate actions.

The task of preparation of report was accomplished under the supervision of Navdeep Asija, Traffic Advisor, Punjab and Arbab Ahmad, Project Manager, Punjab Vision Zero Accident, along with Road Safety Engineer Charanjeet for SAS Nagar, Manpreet Singh for Shri Fatehgarh Sahib and Vaibhav Sharma for Rupnagar.
