Seminar at Pbi Uni by Defence and Strategic Studies deptt

Patiala-Centre for Development Economics and Innovation Studies (CDEIS), Departments of Defence and Strategic Studies and Political Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala jointly organized a public lecture on India’s Selective Participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative(BRI) on 26 April 2018 in the Senate hall of the University.Prof.(Dr) Swaran Singh JNU, New Delhi was the Keynote speaker.

Dr Inderjeet Singh Chahal Head, Department of Defence and Strategic Studies hosted the public lecture. Prof.(Dr) Jagroop Kaur Dean, Social Sciences welcomed the guests and the gathering and Prof.(Dr) Lakhwinder Singh Gill Coordinator CDEIS, Dean Foreign Students& Head Dept. of Economics. Introduced the keynote speaker Prof.(Dr) Swaran Singh.

Lecture started with the historical and geo strategic importance of both India and China. The lecture went on highlighting on various aspects of International Relations including the changing geo-strategic and geo-political environment relevant to Sino- Indian aspects.

Various interests of China leading to its aspirations to lead in global level by throwing light on various political, economic and strategic importance of BRI to China and thereafter its implications on India who makes all the efforts to be at par with China was discussed.

Towards the end of the lecture various BRI specific issues of India were discussed because India is not comfortable with this posture of China. So India being at a strategic location in the Indian Ocean Region as a developing economyin Asia, has a uphill task of taking her neighbours into confidence who are attracted towards the project(BRI) so that Indian interests in the region are intact. Thus the lecture concluded by discussing various concerns of India which it feels the BRI to be not fully in her interest.

Prof. (Dr) Gurdeep Singh Batra Dean, Academic Affairs gave his Presidential remarks .Prof.(Dr) Jaspal Kaur Dean, Research proposed a vote of thanks and formally concluded the lecture by National Anthem.
