Today evening the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has taken a decision to reduce the discharge of water from Pong Dam from 75,000 cusecs to 60,000 cusecs.

Till now 75,000 cusecs of water was released from Pong Dam due to regular rainfall and heavy inflow of water in catchment areas.

As per August 23,2025 report the water level of Pong Dam is 1382.75 feet viz-a-viz with last year on same date it was 1359.47 feet. Today 38395 cusecs of water was received in the dam. The maximum storage capacity of the dam is 1,400 feet, with 1390 feet marked as the danger level.

“Due to lesser rain in the catchment area, the inflow of water is reduced in the reservoir of the dam. After reviewing the situation the BBMB authorities today decided to reduce the outflow of water from 75000 to 60000 cusecs. Now, the 18,000 cusecs to water will be released from turbine and 42,000 cusecs from spillway” said a senior functionary of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on the condition of anonymity.

Pong Dam

Earlier on Wednesday, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) had increased the release of water from the Pong Dam into the Beas in response to steadily rising inflows and reservoir levels.

Pong Dam, officially Maharana Pratap Sagar, is a large man-made reservoir on the Beas River in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. In Punjab, the Beas River flows through districts like Hoshiarpur, Amritsar, and Gurdaspur before eventually joining the Sutlej River at Harike .
