Harjinder Singh is the sitting president of sikh’s religious body. The election for the post is going to be held on November 9, 2022. The 191-member general house assembles every year at the Teja Singh Samundri Hall to elect president, other office-bearers and 11-member executive committee.

On the other hand Jagir Kaur, a three-term former president- in 1999, 2004 and 2020 and also a former head of SAD’s women wing of the apex gurdwara body, has been demanding to be chosen as the party’s official nominee for the SGPC presidential poll, scheduled for November 9.

After the Jagir kaur failure to fall in party line, the SAD issued a two-day ultimatum to Kaur, a former legislator, to stop “anti-party” activities, and warned of strict disciplinary action if she failed to follow the order.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Wednesday suspended senior leader Bibi Jagir Kaur from the primary membership of the party after she refused to back down from contesting the election for the president post of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

Sukhbir Badal led akali dal throws weight behind Harjinder Singh, whereas, as per available information, with Bibi Jagir Kaur in the fray, the contest will be interesting and number of the votes cast against SAD candidate is most likely to increase. As per a member from the opposition, this year they are rallying behind Kaur. The opposition members also include former general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur. A majority of the members from Haryana are also expected to support Kaur. The total members from Haryana are 10.
