Two days ago, the state government had approved the increased value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel prices by 61 paise and 92 paise per litre, respectively, and withdrew the Rs 3 per unit power subsidy for consumers with loads up to 7 kW, today the state government has increased the rates of bus fare in Punjab.
The Punjab Transport Department has issued a notification of increased bus fares on Saturday and is expected to generate additional revenue of Rs 150 crore for the state after adjusting the diesel price hike.
But on the other side this move will also increase the financial burden on the state bus undertaking- PRTC and PUNBUS which offers free bus travel to women. The reimbursement claims are also expected to rise by around Rs 50 crore annually.
In addition to this , where the charging of fare involves fraction of Rs 2.50 and above it may be rounded off to Rs 5:00 and the fraction of less than 2.50 rupees may be ignored. Minimum fare shall be charged at the rate of fifteen rupees.
