Tug of war between Brahm Mohindra-Preenet Kaur begins; mayor Patiala called general house

Patiala mayor Sanjeev Sharma Bittu has called a general house to prove his majority.

Bittu has invited all the municipal councillors and three MLA’s –Capt Amarinder Singh, Brahm Mohindra and Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra who were ex-officio members of the municipal corporation Patiala for general house to be conducted on November 25,2021 at 4:00 pm at the municipal corporation auditorium.

Of the 60 seats in the House, 32 are in Captain’s constituency Patiala (urban) , 26 in local bodies minister Brahm Mohindra’s Patiala (rural) constituency and two in Sanaur, represented by Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra in the vidhan sabha.

On November 18,2021  as many as 42 councillors of Patiala municipal corporation formally submitted a requisition with ‘beleaguered’ Patiala mayor Sanjeev Sharma Bittu, asking him to call a general house meeting in order to prove majority in the House.

To save his mayorship, Bittu has to prove his majority with one third-21 councilors. Nearly 18 councillors are supporting Mayor Sanjeev Sharma Bittu out of 60 councillors.

The ‘rebel’ councillors held a meeting with Congress general secretary and Punjab affairs incharge Harish Chaudhary and local bodies minister Brahm  Mohindra in Chandigarh on November 18,2021 before submitting a requisition with  ‘beleaguered’ Patiala mayor Sanjeev Sharma Bittu, asking him to call a general house meeting in order to prove majority in the House.

When contacted a municipal corporation Patiala official to know whether the ex-officio members can (3 MLAs) can also vote, he said “ we are looking into it, as its for the first time in the Punjab history that this type of situation has occurred.

Speculations are rife that horse-trading from both sides are going on as it’s a prestige issue for both Brahm Mohindra (MLA-Patiala rural) and Preneet Kaur, member parliament and wife of former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh.

The requisition has been sent under Section 39 of the Patiala Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, which defines process of removal of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor.
