Women’s Studies Centre, Punjabi University, Patiala organized a Seminar on ‘ Covid-19 and Gender Based Challenges’ on 23rd July,2021. Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Arvind presided over the event. He said that sensitization needs to be initiated among the members in the immediate vicinity. He further added that appropriate measures should be taken at the local level to curtail gender discrimination and ensure & enhance empowerment.

Dr.Rajesh Gill, Dean Research and Prof. of Sociology at Panjab University, Chandigarh was key speaker at the event. She said that due to digital divide, females particularly at micro level had been adversely hit economically & socially both by Covid-19 and lockdown situation. She further added that all the governmental efforts and investment in projects aiming at balance and equality among genders have reversed the growth rate during this period. She remarked that government lacks comprehensive strategy for regression to progression.

Parminder Kaur, CJM, Legal Services, Patiala was the Guest Speaker. She said that family members can play a positive role in reducing the gender disparity prevailing in the society. She professed that only through understanding and enhancing one’s potential, females can be truly empowered and legal documents alone cannot achieve the purpose.

Manjit Kaur, Advocate Punjab & Haryana High Court, Chandigarh also spoke on the occasion. She said that though domestic violence cases increased manifolds during Covid-19 Lock down but no formal legal aid and medical services were made available to the vulnerable section of the society on priority basis. She recommended for establishing cells comprising experts for providing counseling to the victims.

Dr.Ritu Lehal, Director Women’s Studies Centre, Punjabi University, Patiala organized Seminar and formally welcomed the distinguished guests and introduced the theme by focusing on accessibility, safety and security of females vis-a-vis males during this period. She also elaborated upon the past activities and achievements of the Centre.

Dr.Harpreet Kaur Kohli, Assistant Prof., Distance Education, Punjabi University, Patiala coordinated the session.

Dr.B.S.Sandhu, Dean Academic Affairs proposed vote of thanks and said that irrespective of gender, everyone be raised on individual basis.
