Narain Singh Chaura, 68 years old ,who attempted a murderous attack on Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal is a former associate of banned terrorist outfit Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF).
Chaura, who was active as a Panthic leader for some years, belongs to Village Chaura, Ward No.3, Mohalla Sahib Singh, Dera Baba Nanak, district Gurdaspur. As per reports, he has 21 cases registered in various police stations. Most of the cases are registered in the 80’s . In some cases he gets bail.
In another case, Chaura had provided the RDX used in Amritsar car bomb in May 2010. Later he was arrested from Jalalabad (in Ferozepur district). At that time, Chaura carried a Rs 10 lakh reward. once, Chaura was also declared as proclaimed offender in October 2011 for jumping bail and not appearing before the court.
Even he went to Pakistan in 1984. As per unconfirmed reports in the early 1990s, Narain Singh Chaura allegedly made an attempt to kill Sukhbir Singh Badal at Amritsar.
He was arrested in 2013 under cases related to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and spent five years in Amritsar Central Jail. He is released from Jail in 2018.
He is the person who escaped Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) chief Jagtar Singh Hawara along with other three from infamous Burail jailbreak. As per reports, Hawara had made four calls to Narain Singh Chaura, on the night of January 21, 2004, when the four undertrials -Hawara, BKI member Jagtar Singh Tara, BKI (India) operations chief Paramjit Singh Bheora (the three main accused in the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh) and Devi Singh, who was facing murder charges -had escaped from Burail jail. Chaura turned off the electricity supply of the jail for a long time.

However, Punjab police personnel ASI Rachpal Singh , Jasvir Singh and Parminder Singh in civies standing nearby quickly intervened, pushing Narain Chaura’s hand upward, causing him to miss his target. Sukhbir Badal narrowly escaped the attack. The police immediately arrested him along with the 9mm pistol.
