GNDU Vice-Chancellor in trouble after sharing educational session with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat

A controversy has erupted after Dr. Karmjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, was seen informing the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat about initiatives taken by the university at an education conclave organised by Shiksha Samskriti Utthan Nyas in Kochi on Monday (July 28, 2025).

As per freports Prof Karamjeet Singh, VC, GNDU had attended an education seminar organised by the Association of Indian Universities at Amrita Vidyapeetam in Kochi on Monday. At their he had presented his views in around 45 seconds on what the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar is doing to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and other dignitaries.

A video on social media is in circulation, showing V-C rising from his seat in the audience and informing the RSS chief about initiatives at the university, including the introduction of a compulsory PhD course on Bharatiya Parampara (Indian tradition) and the establishment of a Sikh Chair aimed at studying the connections between the Rigveda and the teachings of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev.

As per reports, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat attended a Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas event in Kochi. Specifically, he addressed an “Education Conclave” organized by the Nyas and around 100 delegates from across India, including national coordinators of the Nyas and experts in education, had taken part in the event.

After the issues is highlighted, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee immediately removed Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Vice-Chancellor Dr Karamjit Singh from the committee formed to frame service norms for the Akal Takht’s Jathedar.

Today, after the controversy erupted, the Public Relations Department of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has issued an official statement clarifying that certain media outlets and individuals have been spreading baseless speculations regarding a Vice-Chancellors’ meeting held in Amrita University, Kochi.

According to the statement, GNDU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Karmjeet Singh attended the aforementioned meeting in Amrita University, Kochi upon an official invitation from the organizing association. During the event, he shared details about significant projects undertaken by the university, including the digitization initiative to promote the Punjabi language, environmental campaigns, and efforts to spread Sikh consciousness.

The statement further clarified that invitations to the chief guests and other individuals for the event were extended by the organizers from Amrita University, Kochi. The Vice-Chancellor of GNDU had no direct role in issuing invitations or organizing the event.

The university administration has urged the public to refrain from engaging in speculations or statements based on incomplete or misleading information. It emphasized that maintaining the dignity and integrity of academic platforms and the university is a shared responsibility.
