Veteran Sufi musician, mentor of many Punjabi Singers passes away

Well-regarded musician and teacher Ustad Puran Shah Koti passed away at 72 on Monday morning after a prolonged illness. He had been unwell for the past few months.
Having dedicated his life to popularize Sufi music, Ustad Puran Shah Koti is today held in deep respect by some of the best known names of the Punjabi music world.
Puran Shah Koti was awarded with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to the traditional music of Punjab.
Ustad Puran Shah Koti is known for his vast knowledge across subjects such as society, politics, music, and literature, he was admired for being constantly updated and intellectually engaged with the world around him.

He mentored several prominent artists, including his son Master Salim, Hans Raj Hans, Jasbir Jassi, and Sabarkoti.
“Singing is god’s gift to me. My father Ranjan Das taught me singing. I took further training from Waqir Hussain ‘Sahab’ of Patiala. My wife gave me her support during bad times -when we had nothing to eat and no shelter,” once said Puran Shah Koti, the legendary sufi singer in an interview.
