GNDU alloted four Centres of Excellence in Sports by Government of India

In a recent meeting held at  New Delhi in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, has allotted four Centres of Excellence in Sports to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in the specialties of Athletics, Fencing, Cycling and Swimming.

Prof. (Dr.) Jaspal Singh Sandhu Vice Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University said that the Centres would be fully funded by Government of India which will identify young and talented sportspersons of the age of 10-12 years and to keep them in Sports will be in nearby schools. When they come of age, they will join the university for higher education. Their diet and fee for schooling will be met by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. For purpose of the stay the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has also allotted two 200 bedded sports hostels one for men and one for women fully funded by the Ministry. Under this scheme for every 10 athletes of one specialty, a coach will be provided by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and also a supervisor will coordinate the activities of the centres. This is the only university which has been provided with such a large number of Centres of Excellence, keeping in view that there is a world-class facility for scientific support to the budding sportspersons in the MYAS-GNDU Department of Sports Sciences and Medicine already operational and funded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The ministry has also allotted synthetic track for the athletic events, the grant for which will be released shortly. The grant has also been provided for the up-gradation of the cycling Velodrome already constructed in Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. The ministry has also sought a detailed project report from Guru Nanak Dev University for making its swimming pool suitable for all-season by covering it and providing heating in the cold winter months. Keeping in view the performance of the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in sports and state-of-the-art scientific backup, this will help to nurture sportspersons of the country as per their aspirations to achieve Olympic medals in near future.
