Punjabi university efforts borne fruits; Punjab govt releases first quarter grant; VC pays gratitude to Punjab government

Punjabi University thanked the Punjab government as it issued a sanction letter for grant of ninety crores for the first quarter of the current financial year.  The vice chancellor specially thanked the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema had announced in the assembly that the grant will be released as per the needs of the university. The Finance Department has issued the sanction letter for a grant of ninety crore rupees for the first quarter of the current financial year. With a monthly grant of Rs. 30 crores, it will become easier to pay salaries in the university.

It is worth mentioning that the  Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Singh Mann said in a television interview that premier institute will not remain fund starved.

Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema had made a statement in the assembly that the grant would be given as per the demand of the university. Punjabi University Vice Chancellor Prof. Arvind said that the Punjab government has issued a sanction letter of ninety crores for the first quarter of the current financial year as per its promise.

He added, “With this grant of thirty crore rupees per month, the work of rehabilitation of Punjabi University will begin and this institution will actively pursue its mandate.” Thanking the Punjab government, he said that the Punjab government has supported an institution which provides affordable higher education to rural and poor sections of the society as well as girls. He said, “The government has come forward in difficult times, for which I thank them on behalf of all the students, teachers and employees.” He continued, “I hope that the government will continue to issue grants on time in the same way and I promise on behalf of the university community that we will live up to the expectations of the people of Punjab from the institution.” While mentioning the names of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, he added that they have fulfilled their promise to their alma mater and we are proud of our alumni and thank them.

It is to be mentioned that the then Higher Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer and the present Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains are sympathetic towards the issues of the university and assure every help.

Addressing the press conference, Vice Chancellor Prof. Arvind stated categorically that every effort will be made to improve the work culture of the university. He said that the ongoing campaign against corruption will be taken to a logical end so that a transparent environment can be created in the institution. It is noteworthy that a racket   of corruption was brought to light after Prof. Arvind joined as Vice Chancellor of the university. The multi-crore corruption scam was deep rooted and the racket was active for many years. In this case, the investigation that started with the scam of lakhs has reached about 14 crores. Many accused employees have been suspended or dismissed. The investigation is continuing under the leadership of former High Court judge Zora Singh. Prof. Arvind reiterated that appropriate action will be taken against the wrong doers. He promised that required patronage will be extended to quality research and teaching. He said that research of cutting-edge quality can make the institution relive the glorious past of the 1970s.
