Today, one of India’s most celebrated cricketers and former Indian cricket team captain Bishan Singh Bedi, passes away died. He was aged 77.

The legendary Indian spinner played 67 Test matches between 1967 and 1979, and has 266 wickets to his name. At the time of his retirement, he was India’s leading wicket-taker in Test cricket.

He was among the top wicket-takers in first-class cricket, with a total of 1,560 wickets in 370 games.

A Padma Shri winner in 1970, Bedi also went on to captain India in 22 Tests and played India’s first-ever ODI against East Africa in 1975 where he bowled 12 overs, eight maidens, gave away six runs and picked one wicket.

Bedi had also featured in 10 One-Day International (ODI) matches, in which he took seven wickets. He was said to be as instrumental in the team’s first ODI victory, during the 1975 World Cup, when he ended up with magical figures of 12-8-6-1 against East Africa.

His best Test bowling was 7/98 against Australia at Calcutta in 1969–70, and his best match figures 10/194 at Perth in 1977–78, also against Australia. His highest score of 50 not out, his only half century at Test level, was scored against New Zealand in Kanpur in 1976

Bishan Singh Bedi was born in Amritsar, Punjab on September 25, 1946. His son, Angad Bedi is a Bollywood actor and married to actress Neha Dhupia.
