Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) gets member power, member irrigation

Today, Appointments committee of the cabinet has appointed member power and member irrigation of BBMB. The post of member power is vacant from September 27,2022 and member irrigation from September 2020. As of now the post of member power is vacant and the charge of member irrigation is with the chairman BBMB, Sanjay Srivastava.
The supreme body of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) is headed by a Whole Time Chairman and two Whole Time Members i.e. Member (Irrigation) and Member (Power) who head the Irrigation and Power Wings of BBMB respectively. The Financial Adviser & CAO heads the Finance & Accounts Wing of BBMB. Punjab and Haryana are the biggest stakeholders of BBMB with maximum share in irrigation and power benefits. As per long-standing convention for the last 55 years, Member (Power) was always drawn from Punjab, while Member(Irrigation) from Haryana and Chairman appointed from outside of partner states.
Appointments committee of the cabinet has approved the current duty charge (CDC) of the post of Member (Power), Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to SS Dhadwal , chief engineer ,BBMB for two months. SS Dhadwal is presently working as chief engineer generation BBMB, Nangal.
The charge of the post till the date of his superannuation i.e February 28,2023 or till the regular appointment to the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
In a separate order, SD Sharma, chief engineer, got the current duty charge (CDC) of the post of Member (Irrigation), Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). SD Sharma is presently working as chief engineer BSL project, Sundernagar.
He is appointed for a period of six months or till the regular appointment to the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Under section 97 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act 1966, the centre issued the notification on the 23rd. February about a change in the rules for the appointment of full-time members of the BBMB. After the notification was tabled in Parliament and a number of MPs from Punjab and Haryana filed objections and demanded the scrapping of the new rule.
Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) is dedicated to the service of nation and is engaged in regulation of the supply of Water & Power from Bhakra Nangal and Beas Projects to the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pardesh, Delhi and Chandigarh.
As per the conventional practice, two posts of full time members (irrigation and power) have always been filled by candidates of Punjab and Haryana. The members were generally nominated by respective state governments. Member (Power), is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the BBMB’s powerhouses, substations and power transmission and Member (Irrigation), is responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of dams, barrages and hydel channels.
