Former Punjab cadre IAS officer who remained CEC of India passes away

A former Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer from the Punjab cadre and former chief election commissioner of India and Padma Vibhushan awardee Manohar Singh Gill passed away on Sunday at Max Hospital in South Delhi’s Saket.
Manohar Singh Gill, served as the Chief Election Commissioner from 1996 to 2001.
Gill was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2004 on a Congress ticket and has previously held the posts of Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports and Minister of Statistics and Programme Implementation under the Congress government.
In 1958, he joined the Indian Administrative Services and served in administration at various places in different capacities in the undivided Punjab until 1966 when Punjab was trifurcated to carve out separate states of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. His various postings included as Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Mahendragarh, now in Haryana, Deputy Commissioner of the then Lahaul-Spiti district, now in Himachal Pradesh. He also served as the Agriculture Secretary of Punjab from 1985-1987 under Capt Amarinder Singhwho was then the Agriculture Minister of Punjab.
