Punjab State Medical and Dental Teachers Association has taken a serious note of the press statement by Union of Resident Doctors Punjab which has opposed the increase in the retirement age of medical teachers in the state.

In a joint press release, PSMDTA state President Dr. DS Bhullar, General Secretary Dr. Jaspreet Singh and State Coordinator Dr. Darshanjit Singh Walia said that some mischievous elements with ulterior motives are trying to create confusions in the health and medical education cadres and misguiding the government with such false and baseless statements.

It is totally baseless to say that the new recruits are more updated and efficient than the teachers who have taught these new recruits with their updated knowledge and vast experience of years and such statements show the disrespect and the mind-set of such mischievous elements on this National Teachers Day.

Except the two medical colleges in the state under Government of Punjab, the retirement age of medical teachers in all government and private medical colleges is 65 years throughout in the country as per the permitted requirement of National Medical Commission and time bound promotion and increase in the retirement age of medical dental teachers are the two main long pending demands of medical and dental faculty but not fulfilled due to lacklustre approach of the government.

PSMDTAThere is no such provision and rules in medical education department that three assistant professors are recruited on retirement of one professor as alleged in the statement and if the specialist resident doctors are actually serious in serving the people of Punjab, they should join in the health department as right now 785 posts of specialist doctors are lying vacant in the Punjab Health and Family Welfare Department and instead of deputing the specialists in medical colleges, Punjab Government should appoint all these specialists in PCMS cadre so that people of Punjab can get services of specialist doctors.

Instead of advising the teachers to care about the future of their students, the specialist resident doctors must show their concern to serve the state in the field instead of running to medical colleges. The vacant posts which need immediate filling by Health and Family Welfare Department in Punjab include 107 in anaesthesia, 93 in medicine, 25 radiology, 106 in paediatrics, 5 in chest and TB, 94 in gynaecology, 19 in forensic medicine, 66 in general surgery and 20 in ENT along with 250 another vacant posts in other specialities and the state government must fill all these vacant posts on priority instead of absorbing these specialists in medical colleges.

There are about 25 re-employed medical teachers in both government medical colleges in Punjab and the state government should enhance the age of retirement to 65 years instead of reemploying the teachers which is humiliation to the senior teachers being reemployed on junior posts. Moreover, by retaining the senior faculty for three more years, the government will escape the financial crunch being faced and more doctors will be able to join post-graduation courses in medical colleges. It is to be mentioned that three PG students in clinical and two PG students in non-clinical departments are allotted to the post of a professor while an assistant professor can a be PG teachers after some years of teaching experience and hence the requirement of time bound promotions.
