Former President of All India Congress Committee (AICC) Rahul Gandhi would launch the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ (Uniting India rally) in Kanyakumari, after paying homage and meditating on September 7 at the Sriperumbudur memorial near Chennai, the site of the assassination of his father Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.

But, here in Punjab, his party’s Member of Parliament from Patiala, Preneet Kaur has launched anti party activities and today she lead  “Punjab Lok Congress protest” against the non-fulfillment of Bhagwant Mann led aam aadmi party (AAP) poll promise of Rs 1000 per month to every women above 18 in the state. Is this is her “Bharat Jodo” style of functioning or anti party activities?

The highlight of today’s Congress MP Preneet Kaur protest in Patiala is, the women who participated in the protest are from Punjab Lok Congress, the party launched by her husband Capt Amarinder Singh, not from her own party- Congress. Even MLA Candidate for Punjab 2022 elections of Punjab Lok Congress party from Bassi-Pathana Constituency in Fatehgarh Sahib, Dr Deepak Jyoti also participated in the protest organized by Congress MP Preneet Kaur.

As per available information, no congress workers from Patiala parliamentary constituency are participating in any of Preneet Kaur’s function and only Punjab Lok Congress workers, leaders are joining her in her activities.

Earlier on August 13, 2022, Preneet Kaur, Congress MP had chaired a meeting with the senior leaders and workers of Patiala district in which Congress leaders remained conspicuous by their absence. In that meeting, Punjab Lok Congress, BJP leaders amongst others attended the meeting.

Even on August 15, this year she had hoisted the National Flag at Patiala’s Mahatma Gandhi Statue on the occasion of India’s 76th Independence Day, in the presence of local BJP, Punjab Lok Congress, an ally of Bhartiya Janta party, leaders and workers. This was for the first time in the history that she or anyone from Capt Amarinder Singh family fails to hoist National Flag at Qila Chowk. As per the prevalent tradition, someone from the Royal family hoist the National Flag at Qila Chowk on Republic Day and Independence Day. This year local Congress leaders hoist the National Flag at qila chowk and Preneet Kaur was forced to perform the ceremony at Mahatma Gandhi’s Statue.During the ceremony, no local Congress leadership attended her funtion.

For now congress workers are annoyed with the party high command’s “no action attitude” against anti party activities of Preneet Kaur. “She had openly supported, campaigned for opposition leaders and went against the party candidate in the assembly elections, held in February 2022.  The high command openly ignored her anti-party activities. The behavior of party high command and senior leaders towards Patiala congress workers are highly condemnable. They just add salt on their wounds.” said a congress leader on the condition of anonymity.

On the other hand, Preneet Kaur while handing over the memorandum to the Patiala DC Sakshi Sawhney said, “I stand before you representing the ladies of Punjab as we demand the state government to immediately fulfill its commitment to the common folk. I also want to point out to the government through you that the vendetta politics that they are playing against us, will not be tolerated at all. Picking and targeting our MCs just because we are in opposition is completely unfair and unjust and it should be stopped immediately.”

She added “During Captain Amarinder Singh’s tenure as chief minister of Punjab, many pro-women policies like giving them free bus travel, 50% reservation in Local bodies and Panchayati Raj elections, increase the amount of Shagun schemes and many more were implemented.”
