The moment ministry of home affairs gave green signal to Punjab’s director general of police (DGP) VK Bhawra for Central deputation, the news brought sigh of relief for Punjab government officers, Punjab police group of officers .
Yesterday, the ministry of home affairs has placed VK Bhawra on the “offer list” for Central deputation along with Himachal Pradesh DGP Sanjay Kundu, a 1989 batch IPS officer.
Former Punjab Director General of Police V.K. Bhawra who went on leave after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government sought an explanation from him for mishandling certain crime incidents, including the murder of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh alisa Sidhu Moosewala, has been placed on the “offer list” for Central deputation after the State government’s nod. Days before his leave was to come to an end, the officer were transferred as Chairman, Punjab Police Housing Corporation, overlooking the Apex court guidelines that mandate to have head of the police force for at least two years.
VK Bhawra was appointed as the State DGP in January this year by the Charanjit Singh Channi-led Congress government just before the model code of conduct was enforced ahead of the Punjab Assembly election.
The border State does not have a full-time DGP yet. After Mr. Bhawra proceeded on a two-month leave in July, the government gave Gaurav Yadav, a 1992-batch IPS officer an additional charge as the State’s police chief.
Sigh of relief for Punjab government as MHA places Punjab DGP on “offer list”. “These officers would get the posting as and when any suitable post falls vacant as per their eligibility and the empanelment at the Centre,” said a senior Punjab government official, who wished not to be named.
