In a recent operation, a team led by Tehsildar Sumit Dhillon seized 111 kilograms of banned hybrid seeds, including DRH 834, MP 3030, and Super 120, from a seed seller’s shop in Nangal. The seeds were sealed, and further action is being taken under the Insecticides Act, 1968, and Rules, 1971.
The Punjab government imposed a ban on the sale of hybrid paddy seeds due to concerns over water misuse, lower outturn ratio during rice milling, and economic losses for farmers and millers. Despite awareness campaigns, complaints persisted, prompting authorities to take strict action.
Agriculture Officer Amarjit Singh emphasized that Deputy Commissioner Varjit Walia has instructed officials to investigate sellers of banned hybrid seeds and conduct awareness camps to advise farmers against using them. SDM Nangal, Anamjot Kaur, warned that shopkeepers violating government directives will face strict action and urged farmers to use only department-recommended seed varieties.
