Dr HS Bedi achieves medical milestone, treats complex Lung Tumour in 73 year old patient at Park Grecian Hospital

Park Grecian Hospital, Mohali, has successfully treated a 73-year-old patient with a large left lung tumour using the latest surgical technology combined with an indigenously developed and globally validated surgical technique thus marking a significant advancement in thoracic care in the region.
“The patient, a frail and malnourished elderly woman, had not responded to maximum medical therapy before being referred to Dr. Harinder Singh Bedi, director–cardio thoracic surgery, Park Grecian Hospital, Mohali” said the spokesperson in a press release.
Given the patient’s age and condition, there was a strong clinical suspicion of malignancy. An initial needle biopsy was inconclusive, making timely surgical intervention crucial.
After comprehensive evaluation, a left upper lobectomy was planned. Such major lung surgeries in frail elderly patients carry a high risk of bronchopleural fistula (BPF)—a potentially fatal postoperative complication involving air leakage from the airway.
The surgery was meticulously performed under special double-lung anesthesia using the latest bronchial blockers by Dr. Priyanka Goyal, cardiac anaesthetist. To minimize the risk of BPF, the team employed advanced stapler-cutter technology along with the Bedi-IMA Buttress Technique, an innovative surgical method developed by Dr. Bedi. The technique utilizes the patient’s own healthy tissue to reinforce the surgical site, reducing the likelihood of airway disruption.
The Bedi-IMA Buttress Technique has been scientifically validated, published in leading surgical journals, and presented at multiple national and international conferences. The patient made a swift and complete recovery, underscoring the effectiveness of combining innovation with advanced technology.
Medical experts highlight that postoperative air leaks are among the most serious complications following lung surgery, particularly in elderly patients. The use of tissue-based reinforcement techniques has been shown to significantly improve outcomes and shorten recovery time.
