Airlines exploiting consumers in the name of farmers protest; airfare price increased manifold

The road connectivity to North Indian states of Punjab, Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir has been hit with farmers protesting and Haryana government blocking roads leading to these states.

With highways also being blocked, the only option to reach or come out of cities like Chandigarh and Amritsar is the aerial route. Though these sectors are usually not traffic heavy, the flights on these routes are flying to full capacity with the few available seats going for a premium.

The Amrisar- Delhi, Chandigarh-Delhi airfares have gone through the roof with one way ticket costing around five times the normal rate.

The round trip air ticket from Chandigarh to Delhi which costs around few thousands on normal days, is available at Rs 20,771, Rs 20,981 , Rs 25,626 for February 13 and 14. The surge is unusually high for the next around a week with normalcy returning on next week.

The air ticket from Chandigarh to Delhi which costs around Rs 3,000 on normal days, is available for rates from Rs 10,621, Rs 16,168.

The airfares on the Amritsar-Delhi route have also skyrocketed in the last two days. There are three airlines, including Air India, Vistara and Indigo, which operate 10 direct flights between Amritsar and Delhi.
