Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay secured a BJP Lok Sabha ticket just days after resigning as a Calcutta High Court judge. Gangopadhyay stepped down as judge earlier this month and joined the Saffron party.
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of Calcutta High Court on March 5 resigned as the Judge and announced his plan to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Lok Sabha election.
His decision to resign comes with five months left until his scheduled retirement in August 2024. Notably, Justice Gangopadhyay has been mired in controversy throughout his tenure, culminating in his disagreement with a division bench led by a senior judge in January this year.
In April last year, Justice Gangopadhyay stirred controversy by discussing a case involving the ‘school jobs for cash scam’ in an interview with a TV channel. His remarks, particularly on TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s alleged involvement, drew criticism from the Supreme Court, which said that sitting judges should refrain from giving media interviews.
