Rotary Club Rupnagar celebrates Rotary foundation day

In a special meeting, Rotary Club Rupnagar celebrated foundation day of Rotary. Club President Engineer Parminder Kumar explained the relevance of the day & welcomed the members for their presence in this special meeting.

At this occasion Past President Professor B S Satyal addressed the club members and explained the journey of rotary International, started in February 1905 by one American attorney Paul Harris,who  formed the Rotary Club of Chicago. The name Rotary was originally proposed by Harris because meetings were to be held in rotation in members’ offices. Rotary grew quickly, establishing local clubs across the United States and internationally. With the formation of clubs in Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, the organization changed its name to the International Association of Rotary Clubs (1912). In 1922, having established clubs on six continents, it adopted its present name, Rotary International. In the early 21st century there were more than 35,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographic areas, representing a membership in excess of 1.2 million. Asia’s first club was established in Manila, Philippines in 1919.  Rotary club of Calcutta became the first club in India on  January 11, 1920 and today more than 3000 clubs operate throughout the country. In 1985, Rotary launched its Polio Plus program to immunize all of the world’s children against polio. As of 2011, Rotary had contributed more than 900 million US dollars to the cause, resulting in the immunization of nearly two billion children worldwide.

Rotary Club Rupnagar celebrates Rotary foundation day

Past District Governor Dr R S Parmar also addressed the gathering and explained how with the passage of time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian services. Members present pledged to support service projects.

On this occasion Past District Governor Chetan Agarwal explained how Rotary develops service projects in seven broad areas: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children through accessible health care and other services, supporting basic education and literacy, growing local economies, and protecting the enviornment.

Rotary Club Rupnagar celebrates Rotary foundation day .On his occasion Rotary birthday was celebrated with a cake cutting ceremony. Club Secretary Advocate Ajay Talwar extended the vote of thanks.
