Dronacharya Awardee Coach Sukhchain Singh Cheema, who himself a bronze medalist in the 1974 Tehran Asian Games, is the son of ‘Rustum-e-Hind’ title winner and Olympian Kesar Singh Cheema, father –coach of Olympian Parwinder Singh Cheema died last night in a road mishap near Patiala.
The accident occurred near village Shermajra Chowk ,around 10km away from the city on the Patiala-Rajpura bypass – when Sukhchain Singh Cheema was returning home from his farm in Bhanri village.
According to Police officials, an Maruti Alto car coming from Rajpura side to Patiala rammed into Cheema’s car. He was immediately rushed to Government Rajindera Hospital Patiala, where he succumbed to the head injuries and died.
Former Union Minister for State Preneet Kaur, Health Minister, Punjab Brahm Mahindra, Forest Minister Sadhu Singh Dharmsot and Local Government, Cultural Affairs & Tourism Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has expressed profound grief at the demise of renowned wrestler and Dronacharya Awardee Coach Sukhchain Singh Cheema who died last night in a road mishap near Patiala.
Condoling the demise of Sukhchain Singh Cheema, Preneet Kaur and the ministers said that Cheema was a dedicated sportsperson who brought laurels to the country. They further said that Cheema belonged to a family of illustrious sportsmen and his father Rustum-E-Hind Kesar Singh Cheema was an Olympian and son Arjuna Awardee Olympian Palwinder Singh Cheema also brought accolades to the nation in wrestling at international level.
Meanwhile along with Preneet Kaur, Brahm Mahindra, Sadhu Singh Dharmsot and Navjot Sidhu, the MLAs from district Patiala Hardiyal Singh Kamboj, Nirmal Singh, Madan Lal Jalalpur, Rajinder Singh and Amrit Partap Singh Honey Sekhon OSD to CM, Divisional Commissioner VK Meena, IG Patiala AS Rai, DIG Dr. Sukhchian Singh Gill, DC Kumar Amit, SSP Dr. S Bhoopathi also prayed to the almighty to may give peace to the departed soul and courage to the bereaved family to bear this loss.
